NY auction smashes record for Frida Kahlo work

A exceptional painting by Frida Kahlo purchased in a fresh York auction property Tuesday for nearly $35 million, an archive price for a work by the iconic Mexican artist.

At the same sale, a painting by French artist Pierre Soulages also broke an archive for his do the job by reaching $20.2 million dollars. 

Needlessly to say, the self-portrait of Kahlo entitled “Diego y yo” (“Diego and me,” 1949), where in fact the deal with of the painter’s husband Diego Rivera looks on her behalf forehead, smashed the ex – record of $8 million set by a Kahlo in 2016.

In the painting, Rivera’s face shows up on Frida’s forehead, above her distinctive eyebrows and dark eyes that a few teardrops fall.

The depiction of Rivera, who at that time was near Mexican actress Maria Felix, as a third eyes symbolizes the degree to which he tormented her thoughts, art experts say.

Kahlo and Rivera married the other person twice. She died aged just simply 47 in 1954.

“Diego y yo” last marketed at Sotheby’s for $1.4 million in 1990.

Soulages’ painting, which had spent a lot more than 30 years in an exclusive collection, corresponds to the reddish period of the century-previous French artist. 

It purchased for $20.2 million after a heated battle between several bidders, a number of them in Sotheby’s auction room and others on the phone, greatly exceeding the prior record reached in 2019 of $9.6 million euros in Paris.
